Your child didn’t come home from school?  I am posting this article about a 5 yr old boy in LA who didn’t come home.  The substitute bus driver didn’t know where the child lived and for some reason never thought to call the mother. The boy’s name tag with name, address and phone number had been pointed out to the substitute driver, but instead of calling anyone, even the bus garage, she chose to let him off in a convenience store parking lot.
The store clerk didn’t call the mother either but told the child, remember he’s only 5, he couldn’t stay in the store. After wandering around the parking lot for about 20 minutes or so a neighbor came into the lot and he recognized her and she took him home.
Mom, of course worried and frightened, was overjoyed to see her boy. What she was not joyful about was the schools’ attitude. It was kind of ho hum, this doesn’t happen here! This was the attitude from the bus garage on up to the Supt. The bus driver was never disciplined in any way, not even reprimanded.Â
It wasn’t until she called a newspaper and tv station that there was finally some action.  The mom was told that she would be called if there was a substitute driver in the future. Â
All well and good and great for this mom. There are now safeguards in place for this little boy and it probably won’t happen to him again.   But…
What about the other children? Are there safeguards in place for them too? I’ve been very upset by the casualness of the schools when something happens to a bus.Â
When PiperDude,  Dancer and Gym Girl were riding the buses and they didn’t come home on time, we always called the school. Nine times out of ten, they had no clue there was a problem. When they finally arrived home we’d find out that a bus broke down and all the kids were put on another bus, doubling up. And making them more than an hour late and we were sitting there worried.
It’s time to make the schools aware that these kids are precious and that all bus drivers should have a cell phone or radio and someone they can call when there is a problem.
